The National Theatre of Northern Greece was founded in 1961 under the direction of Sokratis Karantinos. Instrumental parts of the National Theatre are:

DRAMA SCHOOL
DANCE THEATRE
opera

The new institutional framework governing the N.T.N.G. was voted through in 1994. It states that the Artistic Director is in charge of the theatre (with two deputies, one for artistic and one for administrative issues) and a 7-member Administrative Council. Funding is provided by the Ministry of Culture.
The N.T.N.G. is at present one of the largest theatrical organisations worldwide, from the point of view of available theatrical space. From an artistic aspect, the N.T.N.G. annually presents, a programme which combines internal theatrical productions (including productions by the Dance Theatre and the opera), co-productions with other theatrical organisations, special tributes, exchanges with other theatrical organisations in Greece and abroad as well as invited productions from Greece and other countries. At the same time, in an attempt to approach children and young people, the N.T.N.G. runs a Children's Theatre with performances for schools and educational organisations. During the last few years, special emphasis has been given to research and publications.
The Dramatology department offers theoretical information on theatrical productions and publishes relevant programmes. There is also a monthly programme that includes all the performances of each theatrical period.
The N.T.N.G. has been a member of the Union of Theatres of Europe since May 1996, In October 1997, Thessaloniki hosted the 6th festival of the Union of Theatres of Europe, which was a major cultural event for the city itself, and for the whole of Greece. It is also a member of the International Theatre Institute and the Greek Centre of Theatre for children and youth. Background of the National Theater of Northern Greece
